Since moving to Australia I have greatly missed the delights of fabulously eccentric British antiques and the extraordinary displays on show at all the antiques fairs and markets. As controversial as it is coming from a ”Pom” now living in Australia, we Brits really do antiques like no other!
On my return to London I made it my mission to try and encapsulate the buzzing atmosphere and sheer “Londoness” of the great Portobello Antiques Market along with the wonders on display. Every time I visit the markets they never fail to disappoint- even if it’s bucketing down (which is usually not so disappointing but more expected). Furniture, pictures, trinkets, jewelry and more antique fur than your grandmother’s winter wardrobe. You name it, it’s all there to buy, some killer deals to be made and fierce haggling to be done. As they say, one man’s junk is another’s treasure!

Hello. I’m another ‘pom’ relocated to Australia and yes, it IS controversial, but I too miss all sorts of things about the UK, especially London. I was back there a few weeks ago, but all my plans to visit Portobello etc came fell by the wayside for various reasons and so it was lovely to see your photographs. If I’d found that tray of wooden letters I’d have had to find some way to lug it back with me, so maybe best I didn’t go!

Hello fellow Pom. Glad you enjoyed my post on Portobello Markets. If you are planning on going over, may I advise you go there with an empty suitcase because inevitably you will return with an antique kitchen sink and a vintage bath too! It’s impossible to resist. I will be putting up further post on antiques in the UK in the coming weeks so watch this space! Natalia

Hah, the joke about the vintage bath ain’t so far from the mark – we spent a few days in Marrakesh and aaaaaalmost bought a vast old copper bath. It was all the rugs we bought that stopped us – no room in the suitcases!
